Mettler Toledo empowered Managers through Excellence

Heather BunneyCommercial Director & Lead Leadership Consultant at Cegos Swiss

At the heart of every successful organisation lie empowered leaders capable of driving strategic goals and inspiring their teams. For Mettler Toledo, this vision became a reality through their groundbreaking Management Skills Training (MST) Blended Learning Journey, developed in partnership with Cegos.

MST's remarkable impact has now been recognised on a global scale, earning the prestigious Bronze Brandon Hall Award in the category of Best Use of a Blended Learning Programme.

From Vision to Excellence: a Learning Journey Aligned with Strategy

Mettler Toledo sought to create a consistent, global approach to management development that aligned with their growth objectives and cultural values. As their operations expanded across continents, the need for unified leadership principles became critical. With this in mind, the MST Blended Learning Journey was meticulously designed to equip people managers with the skills needed to foster collaboration, inspire their teams, and become drivers of organisational success in a dynamic global environment.

Several key factors made this Management Blended Learning Journey stand out:

  1. Co-Participatory Design
Collaboration was at the heart of this success. Mettler Toledo’s Learning & Development team partnered with Cegos to create a learning journey that reflected real-world challenges faced by new managers, in the context of their organisational reality. This co-creation ensured the content was both relevant and immediately actionable.
  2. Scaffolding Learning Approach
The journey broke down complex management concepts into manageable steps, providing the necessary support to help learners build confidence and competence, step by step. A peer-coaching system facilitated the transition from external support to internal collaboration, creating a sustainable learning ecosystem.
  3. Spaced Learning Principle
Learning was delivered through regular touchpoints in various formats, allowing learners to absorb knowledge, apply and share their challenges progressively. This approach of bringing learning to the flow of work fostered reflection, experimentation, and the gradual adoption of effective practices.
  4. Blended Learning Framework
By integrating in-person workshops, virtual learning sessions, digital resources, and on-the-job activities, the MST journey provided flexibility and personalisation. This blend catered to individual development needs and learning preferences, ensuring a holistic learning experience that contributed to the development of Mettler Toledo learning culture.

The Ripple Effect of Leadership Development

Since its initial rollout, the MST Blended Learning Journey has touched the lives of over 400 managers across North America, Europe, and Mexico, delivering impressive results. Learners reported increased self-awareness, enhanced team performance, and stronger alignment with corporate strategies.

The impact didn’t stop at individual development. Numerous MST graduates have since advanced to senior positions, bringing their newfound skills and shared leadership language to higher levels of the organisation.

Beyond equipping managers with critical leadership skills, the journey fostered a culture of shared purpose and continuous learning. Managers who completed the journey reported significant improvements in team performance, alignment with corporate strategy, and their ability to navigate organisational challenges. A remarkable 72% of learners reported successfully integrating their learning into their day-to-day management practices.

As one graduated Manager shared: "The MST Journey transformed my approach to leadership. I now connect better with my team, drive results, and embrace change. It’s not just a learning journey; it’s a catalyst for success."

Leadership: Unleashing the power of diversity

The Power Behind Success

By seamlessly blending diverse learning methods, the MST journey cultivated a culture of leadership excellence and learning agility. The programme’s deliberate focus on self-awareness and skill development empowered managers to navigate complex challenges with confidence and resilience.

Crucially, MST’s alignment with organisational objectives ensured that leadership competencies directly supported Mettler Toledo’s vision and mission. Advanced learning analytics tracked progress and measured success, enabling continuous improvement.

Karen Clark, Head of Learning & Development Manager at Mettler Toledo North America, emphasised the transformative impact of this Blended Learning Journey: "The MST Blended Learning Journey isn’t just a management skills learning journey; it’s our secret weapon for organisational excellence. By investing in our managers, we’ve unlocked a ripple effect that positively impacts every corner of our business."
