We all benefit from being mentored, and many of us owe our success to sound advice given to us throughout our career. But there comes a time when you are the one responsible for dispensing sage advice. The question is, how do you mentor someone in a way that is useful to them whilst being a rewarding experience for you?

03. The Four Bases of Mentoring
  • Organisational Base
  • Context Base: start a relationship, 2-way responsibility
  • Development Base: effective learning (Kolb’s Experiential Learning Cycle), skills of a mentor, appreciative inquiry, mentoring versus coaching
  • Interpersonal Base: give feedback, pinpointing or labelling, the AID Model, difficult conversations

  • Scope a mentoring relationship and effectively work with your mentee to motivate them.
  • Identify your responsibilities and the ‘four base’ mentoring model to help ensure that valuable learning takes place.
  • Created a useful mentoring plan, along with the confidence to work with your mentee and encourage their successful development.
